Vadym Stolar: Our second grant program of UAH 1,000,000 will be aimed at psycho-emotional recovery of people

Politician and philanthropist Vadym Stolar and his team plan to conduct a second grant program after the success of the first one this spring, which was related to the physical rehabilitation of war victims. This time, the team plans to focus on the psychoemotional recovery of Ukrainians. About the plans, peculiarities of the problem and the relevance of the topic - in our material.

Vadym Stolar: Psychoemotional rehabilitation of war-affected Ukrainians is extremely urgent

"When launching the grant program in the spring, we were aware of its relevance, but we could not even imagine how powerful the response would be. After receiving about a hundred applications, getting to know the representatives of various foundations and public organizations, we realized that financial support is important for them and it should be continued, - emphasizes Vadym Stolar. - Also, during the implementation of the first program, we saw that the psychoemotional rehabilitation of Ukrainians affected by the war - both military and civilian - is no less important and has a great demand. So now we decided to focus on this issue."

It should be noted that in the first program for financial assistance to public organizations and charitable foundations, those who take care of the rehabilitation of defenders of Ukraine won the competition to receive it. Then four organizations received UAH 1,000,000 from the Vadym Stolar Charitable Foundation for the implementation of their ideas, which had already purchased the necessary equipment and facilities with this money.

Vadym Stolar appeals to specialized professionals to unite in order to make the grant program as effective as possible

The philanthropist not only announced the future grant program, but also addressed those who have a direct relationship with the chosen topic.

"We appeal to public organizations that take care of issues of psychological support for military and civilian citizens, management of specialized institutions, and directly to psychologists and psychotherapists. We want our next grant program to be as effective as possible, and for this we need your help in identifying the priority problems: what are the most common questions, what needs are difficult to close or which are not fully satisfied?” - declares Vadym Stolar.

Vadym Stolar: The field of psychoemotional recovery in Ukraine faces a number of problems

Having inquired about the current situation in the field of psychoemotional rehabilitation of citizens, Vadym Stolar and his team came to the conclusion that there is work to be done in this area.

"We have an understanding of the main problems that specialized public organizations, institutions and professionals are currently facing. The main reason for their occurrence is that the Ukrainian system of providing psychological assistance was not designed for wartime, when the number of people with disorders increases by an order of magnitude, - explains Vadym Stolar. - It is because of this that in the country for a year and a half of the war, we have observed a low availability of relevant services, because there is a lack of facilities for providing assistance, insufficient funding in this area, and not enough specialists."

According to the philanthropist, he and his associates realize that in fact the issue of psychoemotional recovery is complex and complicated, and only those who consistently work on it can outline the general picture of the most urgent needs.

Vadym Stolar's initiative is important against the background of significant deterioration of the psychological state of Ukrainians

Today, we observe a significant deterioration of the psychological state of Ukrainians, which is a consequence of the war unleashed by Russia. A significant percentage of citizens have serious psychoemotional disorders, and these are only those who are trying to live in the realities of today, not to mention the military. Unfortunately, this trend is only growing. Our task is to break it, because the health and future of the nation depends on the internal state of people.

According to information from the World Health Organization, more than 25% of Ukrainians may have mental disorders today, although not all are aware of it and eventually seek qualified help. That is why domestic trauma therapists say, that in fact, as a result of the war, 80% of Ukrainians will have various mental disorders.

Among the most serious and common psychological problems are the following: post-traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD, expected to be experienced by 20-30% of people), depression, increased anxiety, panic and somatic disorders, etc.

Vadym Stolar says that together with the team, we would first like to focus on the most urgent and massive problems.

In particular, the problem of PTSD attracts almost the most attention. According to last year's study, more than 90% of the respondents had manifestations of at least one of the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder, and 57% of citizens are at risk of its development.

It is worth noting the following symptoms of PTSD:

- constant and uncontrolled thoughts about traumatic events, dreams about them;

- feeling of constant danger;

- excessive excitement;

- avoiding mentions of trauma;

- panic attacks: a feeling of fear, shallow breathing, nausea, rapid heartbeat, chest pain;

- abuse of alcohol, cigarettes or drugs;

- troubles in everyday life;

- problems in the relationship, distance from the partner;

- suicidal thoughts;

- inability to express and show emotions: cry, rejoice, sympathize.

However, for all its seriousness, PTSD is a treatable disorder. Psychotherapy and medication help can return a person to a normal healthy life.
