The wife of a fallen soldier

"My husband is a soldier, a border guard, he served for eighteen years and eight months. When the war started, on the very first day he and his comrades left to fight in the city of Kreminna. And since then we have not seen each other. And we will never see each other again..." - in these words , full of grief, Svitlana begins her story for "History of the Strong". They and their children are immigrants from the Luhansk region, before the Great War they lived near the border with Russia.

"And already at five in the morning there was an emergency phone call - and the husband rushed to work... The children were still asleep, they didn't even say goodbye. And he never came back."

The man's unit was taken to other positions. Svetlana and her children stayed in the village, which was occupied almost immediately. "On one side - Russia, and on the other - burning. There was nowhere to go. And what? The railway did not reach us anymore. It became scary, very scary..."

April 13, 2022

The man died on April 13, 2022. I didn't find out about it right away - they were afraid to tell me this terrible news... But I was texting him all night, thinking that he just couldn't get in touch."

"I couldn't even bury him, say goodbye to him - they didn't let us out of the village for the funeral, and they didn't allow us to bring his body."

Svitlana tells how hard it is to experience the pain of losing a loved one. He recalls the betrayal of friends, the interrogation of Russian non-humans, the difficult departure from the occupation and the long adaptation to new living conditions.
